 that You did it! You finished designing a pattern collection!
Before you get too comfortable, here are 10 action steps that will help you move forward toward your goal of licensing your surface designs. 1) Name the collection and make a logo using motifs from the patterns. Think about what inspired you as you created your collection - I often find my collection names emerge from the feelings surrounding how I felt as I planned for, painted, and put together the patterns. Grab a couple of individual motifs from the collection and create a simple "logo" featuring your collection name. 2) Create and save 8.5x11 sized images of all the patterns (I use Photoshop to do this). I always create jpgs of my patterns (so I'm not just sharing the original repeating tile) to use for my website, social media, etc. Having these files prepared for easy access later (see #7) always saves me so much time! 3) Add a light fabric overlay (hint: set to multiply) to the above jpgs and save again. These files are wonderful when it's time to create posts and stories for Instagram and Pinterest! If you don't license for fabric (I do!), you can skip this step. 4) Create 5 to 10 mockups representing a couple of industries in which you're licensing or hoping to license. Creatsy and Creative Market are great places to find mockups that will show off your art in a fantastic way! 5) Upload to Spoonflower. Again, I design for fabric and wallpaper, so if this doesn't apply to you, feel free to skip. 6) Create images (I use and love Canva!) for use in Pinterest scheduling and social media posting. I'll admit to having a bit too much fun with this! Use the mockups and the jpgs you made above and get creative! 7) Make a call sheet featuring all the patterns, the collection logo, and your contact information. The layout can be simple and repeatable (for future collections). I use a template I created in Canva. 8) Create a blog post for the new collection. This enables you to have a unique URL on a domain that you own (if you have your own website) for linking to on Pinterest. Here's an example of one of mine - you can also see some examples of mockups, a collection logo, and a call sheet! 9) Share the collection with my email list and various social media platforms (Instagram, Pinterest, etc). Put your beautiful labor of love out into the world! 10) Celebrate! Every collection you create expands your skill set and your portfolio! You should be proud of your hard work and growth!
